Periodontal Disease Treatment Q & A

What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease, or gum disease, refers to a group of conditions that damage your gums and destroy your jawbone. There are several types of periodontal disease, but the two most common are:

Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease. It causes your gum tissue to become red, irritated, and puffy. Gingivitis doesn’t always present obvious symptoms. You may be at risk if your gums regularly bleed or become sore while brushing and flossing.

If gingivitis continues to advance, it turns into periodontitis. Periodontitis is a more serious infection that causes gum recession and bone loss. When left untreated, it increases your risk of more serious health problems, including heart and lung disease.

What is periodontal disease treatment?

Periodontal disease treatment is a group of procedures used to manage gum disease and prevent it from getting worse. At Pure Health Dental, the team offers several periodontal disease treatments, including:

Scaling and root planing

During scaling and root planing, your Pure Health Dental provider carefully removes the plaque and tartar from the surfaces of your teeth and from beneath your gum line.

Next, your provider smooths the rough spots on the surfaces of your teeth. This allows your gums to reattach, preventing further decay and recession.

Antibiotic treatment

If you have a moderate case of gum disease that doesn’t respond to scaling and root planing, the team might recommend antibiotic treatment. Prescription antibiotics can eradicate harmful bacteria and strengthen your gum tissue.

There are two ways to take antibiotics for gum disease. The team might recommend pills, or they might implant antibiotic “beads” beneath your gum tissue.

Flap surgery

If you have gingivitis and it causes large pockets around your gums, you might benefit from flap surgery. During flap surgery, your Pure Health Dental provider lifts your gum tissue and carefully cleans the tartar from beneath them.

Your provider then tightens your gums so they fit snugly around each tooth. They stitch your gum tissue in place, reducing the size of the space between your gums and teeth.

Soft tissue graft

If periodontal disease caused significant gum recession, the team might recommend a soft tissue graft. This treatment involves your Pure Health Dental provider taking a healthy piece of tissue from another area of your mouth and attaching it to your damaged gum tissue.

What type of periodontal disease treatment is right for me?

The type of periodontal disease treatment that’s right for you depends on your oral health history, the severity of your infection, and your long-term goals. Following a comprehensive oral exam and a review of your oral health history, the Pure Health Dental team develops a custom care plan to align with your needs.
